The official title of what is commonly called the “Baker to Vegas Relay” is “The Challenge Cup Relay,” which has been running since 1985. The event began with two Los Angeles police officers who were the general manager and the athletic director of the LAPD Athletic Club, with the purpose of serving as incentive for law enforcement officers to maintain physical fitness. The race has grown from its initial 14 teams in the early years to today’s maximum of 270 teams.
